I once was asked to name the person who had most g I once was asked to name the person who had most greatly influenced my life. “My mother,” I answered. She was an Italian seamstress who emigrated to Canada in the 1950s and found work in the Spadina manufacturing district. She loved fashion, fine fabrics and sewing beautiful garments. I was introduced to this world by working weekends as a teenager in the cutting sewing rooms where she worked. With her support and help, I launched my career, and she remained my head sample-maker until she retired at 81 years of age. She was a kind generous soul, who was pure of heart and sweet in spirit. My wife tells me I inherited those features from her. I can only hope to live up to my mother’s level of goodness.
